Uniform
At Nelson Primary School our children are proud to be members of the school and wear our uniform. The uniform has been designed to be practical for a primary school while reflecting the high standards expected at school – it is to be worn with pride at all times.
We feel that it is important that children learn to dress smartly and appropriately. They grow up at Nelson understanding that most secondary schools and later in life, businesses, require smart, professional dress.
We look to parents to work with the school to ensure that children come to school always maintaining a high standard of dress and with at least a minimum of the correct colours in their clothing.
We value learning so highly that we do not send children home to change. However, we hope that we do not have to deal with uniform transgressions.

School Uniform
- White polo shirt – Infants (Reception, Year 1, Year 2)
- White polo shirt/blouse/shirt – Juniors (Year 3, Year 4, Year 5, Year 6)
- Grey skirt, tunic, trousers or shorts, or blue and white gingham check dress
- Royal blue sweatshirt or cardigan / Nelson sweatshirt or Nelson Cardigan*
- White, grey, black or blue socks or tights
- Velcro or buckle black or blue shoes (no high heels, sandals or boots)
- Plain black trainers (no brand or logo visible)
P.E Kit
- Navy or black shorts
- White t-shirt / Nelson t-shirt, or Nelson sports top *
- Plimsolls (for indoors)
- Trainers (for outdoors)
- Tracksuit / leggings (navy blue or black bottoms)
- Socks
PE kits should not include items with sport or team logos.
OPAL
Children should have the following names items at school to wear at playtime during wet weather:
- water proof coat/trousers
- spare pair of outdoor shoes or welly boots
Swimming
Children will need a one-piece swimsuit and towel to school on the day they swim. Long Bermuda-type shorts are not suitable as they restrict movement and make it difficult for children to learn to swim. Unless children have suitable swimwear, regrettably they will not be able to take part in the lesson as we do not keep spare kit. For safety and hygiene reasons, it is most important that all children wear a swimming hat. Jewellery must not be worn in school; earrings can be particularly hazardous, therefore, any child sent to school wearing them on a day when they are due to swim will not be allowed in the pool. If you would like your child to wear goggles whilst swimming, please write a note to tell the swimming teacher.
Named items
All items of clothing need to be named and children need to be encouraged at home and school to take care of their property.
Hair & Jewellery
- Hair must be neat and tidy (covered, plaited or in a pony-tail if long). Extreme colours or styles that undermine the ethos or discipline of the school will not be permitted.
- No make-up, nail polish or nail extensions are allowed.
- Watches, small stud earrings or religious items required by the child’s faith may be worn. No other items of jewellery are allowed.
